In the comments below, tell us 3 interesting things you learned in your new research, and where you learned each thing. Include the name of the author (if there is a named author) and the name of the source.
Include your first name and last initial in your comment.
Here are my three ideas:
ReplyDeleteAccording to Leslie Horn,PC Magazine 2011, 80% of teens have witnessed cyberbullying and 15% have been victims of it.
Quin Li wrote in 2006 that males were more likely to be victims of cyberbullying but that females reported it more often.
According to Smahel,2011 there are 6 signs of internet addiction; Salience, mood change, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse.
Susan S.
This looks interesting - definitions of terms will be helpful as you keep researching, and more research into whether internet addiction is a recognized mental health issue and how strong the connections are between use of the 'net and mood problems.
DeleteCan't wait to see what you find as you keep going forward!
I researched the beginning of social networking:
ReplyDelete-It all started in the 1970s with BBS (Bulletin Board System). This was a place for users to download files and games and post messages to each other.
-Then came CompuServe. This was a path for social networking. Members could share files and access news and events. This was the beginning of true interaction. For example, e-mail and discussion forums.
-In the mid-1990s, the internet before the internet was established by AOL (America Online). Yahoo was set up, Amazon began selling books, and the race to get a computer was everywhere.

This will be interesting as you compare trends in mental health and other issues over time and see if there are any correlations. Good job.

ReplyDelete1. I learned that social networks help organize and spread information to the world. people have the chance to be independent reporters and cover issues that are important to them and others.
2.I also learned that social networks connect people with mutual ideas and interest because sometimes an individual may feel isoloated from his peers in his enviorment because of his certain beliefs and social networks connect them with similar people.
3.I learned that a person may be influenced by the actions of their peers on social netoworks. If an individual observes many of he's peers on a social network doing a certain thing the individual may also adapt the certain trend going on, this can either be good or bad.

This is good - I'm glad you found some potentially positive effects. Is there any quantitative data to support that last claim (#3)?

ReplyDeleteThis is what I found:
1.) According to the study in the article, kids' lung and heart fitness is going down by 4.3% all around the world. I learned that outdoor recreation centers would help decrease this.
2.) Typically children consume their time with Television, Computers, and Video Games. Each of them would spend eight hours per day.
3.) In the study it stated that kids are less active at their house because that's where the distractions are and it is not making them do physical activities.

It looks like some of your research might overlap with the people doing media and teens. Y'all might think about exchanging sources as you find them.
DeleteAgain, the more concrete evidence you find of links between local rec centers and local levels of health among kids and teens, the better!
Good start, this is a good way to go.
The Hunters Point area has the highest infant mortality rate in California, even though San Francisco has one of the lowest infant mortality rates for similar sized cities in the U.S. (Dillion, Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, UC Berkeley)
ReplyDeleteThe Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory started research at Hunters Point on the effects of nuclear weapons in 1946. The lab later expanded its research to include all uses of nuclear material the Navy used. (Howard, E: The Environmental Magazine)
The Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory at Hunters Point, at one time had enough plutonium to kill 15 million people. (Davis, IRE Journal)

Your group is trying to give us all nightmares, eh? This is really interesting. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you all find as you keep researching.
DeleteMy plate nutrion guidence published in 2011 recommends that fruits and vegetables makes up 50% of every meal, but fruits and vegetables are grown on only about 2% of U.S. croplands
ReplyDeleteAlong with acedimic experts and advocates for small and mid-sized family farm, they contend that the large-scale agriculture focuses too heavily on few major crops and relies too heavily on synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and antibiotics for poultry and live stock.

This is all extremely interesting. I'm going to be significantly better informed about the world by the end of this semester! Would love to see more info on your fifth claim.
Delete1. There are several naval and military bases all over the bay, some which still contain raidoactive waste. (Carolyn Jones, SF Chronicle)
ReplyDelete2. The Port Chicago incident was cause by a small explosion that eventually lead to an even bigger explosion that killed and injured many. The explosion was said to have included an atomic bomb which its radiation can still be affecting us till this day(Ian Kluft, Sciscoop Magazine)
3.The Navy and the state Department of Toxic Substances Control, which is also monitoring the cleanup, say that in general radiation levels found on the island are too low to endanger human health.
In a December 2010 e-mail, state public health official Peter Sapunor noted that Navy contractors had dug up and hauled off 16,000 cubic yards of contaminated dirt, some with radiation levels 400 times the Environmental Protection Agency's human exposure limits for topsoil. Sapunor said he believed extensive radioactive material remains in the soil surrounding those excavations. (Matt Smith, Bay Citizen, Published in SF Chronicle)

Wow, scary stuff. Great start - be sure to include as much specific info as you can in your actual paper (I know this was a brief initial report so you're not going too much in depth).
DeleteI got really stuck on the sheer volume of information available from some of questions so I will just present the inquiries and some keywords to indicate where I am looking:
ReplyDelete-What are some common data presentation methods and where are they usually found?
-Rhetoric - politics
-Journalism (journalistic standards) - mass media
-In what subjects does social status quo influence discussion, positively or negatively?
-Discrimination
-Taxation
-What topics are controlled by content creation rules?
-Censorship
-FCC
-In what venues is perceived authority most difficult to assess? Easiest?
-Not too sure about this one; this might not be a good angle for this project.
Craig W.
Don't forget to email me about how you're going to narrow your topic - you're right that this is way too sprawling to do much with at less than book length!
Delete1.) Water that runs off poorly managed fields that have been treated with chemical fertilizers and manure is loaded with nitrogen and phosphorus. These two potent pollutants set off a cascade of harmful consequences, threatening the drinking water used by millions of Americans. (Environmental Working Group (EWG), Poor U.S. Farming Practices Foul Drinking Water at the Source)
ReplyDelete2.) The current farm bill provides more than $54 billion in conservation program spending to protect and enhance water, air, and soil quality; to prevent erosion; and to conserve natural resources. (The Hand that Feeds U.S.,)
3.) Nearly all animals killed for food in the U.S. are chickens and turkeys—more than nine billion each year. They're shackled upside down, paralyzed by electrified water and dragged over mechanical throat-cutting blades. ( The Humane Society of the United States, cruel slaughter pracctices)
Thomas T.
I think we'll all definitely need to look into solutions as part of these projects. Great start in terms of learning about current practices. HSUS is probably considered an advocacy group for this topic, so see if you can find verification (federal inspectors have to come to rendering plants, so there are probably descriptions of standard practices).
Delete1. I have learned that Genetically Modified Organisms have been present over the years in the United States. In addition, there are majority of processed foods such as snack foods, salad dressings, cereals, and etc., contains ingredients from plants in which the DNA has been duplicated in a laboratory. (Battle Brewing Over Labeling Of Genetically Modified Food By Amy Harmon and Andrew Pollack)
ReplyDelete2. In addition, I learned that there are recent declines in farmland biodiversity that is "attributed to agricultural intensification and structural changes in the agricultural landscape". And that organic farming can be used as a more efficient instrument to restore landscape heterogeneity. (The effect of organic farming on butterfly diversity depends on landscape context by M. Rundlof and H.G. Smith)
3. Moreover, I learned that there are research going on in Genetically Modified Organisms. The studies "both humans and animals have found no significant differences in either the safety or nutritional value of most transgenic foods". And that experiments are being created to see if "Bt gene" can be is transferred from "Bt soybean" to bacteria in which that lives in the human gut has been proven negative. Topic: Farming Practices
Okay great start - interesting information. Y'all are going to have your work cut out for you learning about current farming practices! But you'll feel confident going into your analysis that you know what you're talking about.
Delete-14% of online teens say they blog, compared to 28% of teen internet users in 2006
ReplyDelete-This decrease reflects teen commenting on blogs within social
networking websites; 52% of teen social network users report commenting on friends’ blogs,
down from the 76% who did so in 2006
-blogging within the overall adult internet population has
remained steady in recent years; Pew Internet surveys have consistently found that one in ten online adults have a personal online journal or blog

Okay, interesting - are you thinking about the differences between mere consumption of information and participation in conversations online? That could be an interesting avenue to pursue.
Delete1) GenticallyModifiedOrganism's are living organisms where foreign genes have been inserted into. Two techniques used to produce GMO's are
ReplyDeleteA) "gene gun" - device using bursts of helium to transfer particles coated with the desirable copies of the gene directly into the receptor cell.
B) bacterium invades the receptor cell and "plants" some of the DNA with the foreign gene that carries the desired trait.
2) Potential benefits of GMO's - The increase of farm-level productivity via (for example) inserting a bacterium that produces a protein that is toxic to insect pests. This reduces the need for chemical pesticides. Plant breeders are TRYING to genetically engineer plants with added vitamins and minerals nutritionally fortifying crops.
Potential risks of GMO's to human health - Consumption of GMO's may lead to and increase diseases due to resistant of antibiotics (antibiotic resistant residue left over from the bioengineering process consumed &accumulated). Also, people with allergies may consume unknowingly modified food containing allergenic substance that was introduced from an external source. http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/132113/2/WhyAllTheControversy.pdf
3) What is really organic? - Organic farming is a set of farming practices that doesn't use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth promoters, GMO's.

Great start - GMOs are such a fascinating topic. I thought they had succeeded in genetically engineering rice to have more nutrients already - you might look into that. I seem to remember it being a great success of g.e. because then you could solve some hunger issues fairly efficiently.

1. Laboratory animals are often tested on using the most hazardous toxins and chemicals that may be found in genetically modified foods in order to determine safety factors. Testing on animals has many problems - exaggerated amounts of whole foods fed to said animals can deter specific toxins in research, etc.
ReplyDelete2. GMO foods have different standards and stigmas throughout the world, so one must be specific on the location when doing research.
3. Non-GM crops have a much lower standard to look into and it has been discovered that, through centuries of breeding, many crops may have adverse compounds.

DeleteNavy effects on environment in Hunters Point. Fletcher Brown!
ReplyDeleteThe Hunters Point Navy Shipyard constructed and fixed Naval ships in its dry docks in three wars. World War II, The War in Korea and the War in Vietnam.
Hunters Point naval shipyard was home to a secret government research facility known as the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory (NRDL) from 1946 to 1969. This facility was used to decontaminate ships used specifically in Japan in world war two that carried atomic weapons.
The NRDL at one point was working with enough plutonium to kill 15 million people. The NRDL and the Navy would dump atomicly radiated and nuclear sand, waste and acid into the San Francisco Bay. Also, they burned atomic fuel from boilers and let the smoke drift into the atmosphere and dismantled aircraft carriers containing nuclear waste in the Bay.

Jaw dropping. Do we know the status of the clean up effort? Any recent tests?

Intriguing ideas - we'd want to see real research showing strong correlations - the more quantitative data you can find, the better.
DeleteRecreation Centers and their benefits, Jesse Leocario
ReplyDeleteFound an interesting source that focused on the health and social aspects of general recreational activities
*Slightly Out of date, 2005
1) Over 26% of children are overweight, with some areas reaching 40-50%, including risk factors such as heart disease and high blood pressure
2) Survey showed that 75% of respondents said relaxing, and 59% saying relieving tension, were important factors in their favorite recreational activities. Stress relief in a group activity also boosted social connections and calming effect
3) Can affect crime rate in amazing ways, Philadelphia burglary and theft dropping 90%
Here is the link to the source
I don't see that statistic on the Philly burglary and theft in the source? Great source, though, I think it'll be really helpful. One way it can help kickstart your research is that you can look at all of their citations and get the original sources, and then check those sources for more current info. Good!

ReplyDeleteRecreation Centers
1. At the Richmond Recreation Center - Youth Adventure After School Program: Children will receive homework assistance and participate in enrichment programs such as cooking, gardening, arts and crafts, excursions, group games and sports.
Activities include:
-Camp activities - Arts & crafts, games, nature hikes, excursions and special events.
-Computer Literacy Training, Cheerleading, Sailing, Story Time, Tennis, Whitewater Rafting, Basketball League, Flag Football League, Baseball, Swimming and many more.
However there are specific start and end dates for these activities as well as different age groups. Almost all of them have a fee.
How can communities come together to fundraise or have the government pay for these activities so that underprivileged children can also attend and participate?
http://www.ci.richmond.ca.us/index.aspx?NID=106
2. Crime rates are likely to go down if recreation centers are in place.
--Crimes by and against children dropped after a Bakersfield school district began an after-school program for over 1,300 students. Lewd acts against children dropped by 46% within the district boundaries, compared to a drop of only 8% in the rest of the city (FCIK, 2001).
--The burglaries and thefts in a Philadelphia precinct dropped 90%, after police helped neighborhood volunteers clean up vacant lots and plant gardens, falling from 40 crimes each month before the cleanup to an average of only four per month afterward (TPL, 1994).
http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/795/files/benefits%20final%20online%20v6-1-05.pdf
3. Recreation and park facilities enhance education and help improve grades. As children participate in recreation and leisure activities their learning skills are developed and improved, directly impacting their school performance.
--Case studies of educational facilities that adopted environment-based education as the central focus of their academic programs showed 1) improvement in reading and mathematics scores, 2) better performance in science and social studies, 3) declines in classroom discipline problems and 4) high level learning opportunities equalized among students (Mann & Hensley, 2002).

Great, y'all are finding some great resources! This is looking good.
Delete1. On the web page ornl.gov in the article named “Genetically Modified Food and Organisms” I learned that GMOs (Genetically Modified Foods) “GM is a special set of technologies that alter the genetic makeup of organisms such as animals, plants, or bacteria. Biotechnology, a more general term, refers to using organisms or their components, such as enzymes, to make products that include wine, cheese, beer, and yogurt.”
ReplyDelete2. I also learn that the benefits of GOMs can give vitamins that are needed for malnutrition, it also mention that the quality and taste of the food is better.
3. Finally, this article mentions that 53% of the global transgenic crops were grew in the United States.
Mayra Ibanez (Farming Practices)
Interesting information, and a good start in terms of learning about current practices. I wonder what criteria they used to determine that taste and quality are better in GM foods?
Delete1. Teens are actually backing away from society because of social networking
ReplyDelete2. Teens are in more trouble by the type or genre of music they may listen to.
3. Media affects the teens socially and physically with their appearance
We need your sources, and give some more detail in terms of what their evidence was for these conclusions?
Delete1) According to the Public Health Law Center, nationally in 2006, only 28.8 percent of public and private schools provided community access to school recreational spaces outside of the school day. Meaning that when these kids left school, where did they go? It is important to have after school programs so kids can get help with homework, exercise and keep away from crime. Fifty-seven percent of all violent crimes by juveniles occur on school days and 19% in the 4 hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., based on the FBI’s National Incident-Based Reporting System data (Snyder & Sickmund,1999). These crimes occur because of the lack of supervision.
ReplyDelete2) According to The Health and Social Benefits of Recreation, a study made by the e National Park Service and United States Department of the Interior in 2005. Violent crime in urban areas continues to be a concern for Californians. With increasing population and unstable economies, fighting crime is a continual battle. About 80% of Californians believe that with more recreation areas will in turn create less crime. If we can fill the open spaces with parks and recreation centers then we can take the crime away from the big cities.
3) Recreation centers can be used to promote healthy living and healthy food choices.
In Baltimore there is a program called; Baltimore Healthy Eating Zones (BHEZ) it’s a community-based program whose mission it is to improve diet and reduce obesity in low-income African American children in Baltimore City by increasing access to healthy food. The program simultaneously uses recreation centers to draw youth and caregivers, educate them about nutrition, and encourage them to buy healthier items. Youth are involved in educating their peers and parents and approaching store owners and carryout restaurants to stock healthier eating options than have traditionally been available.(This article was produced by Baltimore City Food Policy Task Force.)

Topic:Outdoor Recreation Centers
Great - it's especially interesting to learn about the different programs that are being tried. One thing your group might be interested in looking into is the approaches different groups used to successfully get the money for the programs they started.
DeleteAccording to my topic I've learned 3 very important things and those things are that with recreational settings around young individuals and even older people you can enhance them to be mentally strong and physically strong. The center also keep crime rates down to a minimum and keep kids out of trouble with the activities and events that they partake at the centers. Centers also cut down obesity and other dietary problems with you kids today by having sports programs and such. So recreational centers really make a difference in lives whether it's there for fun or just a get away from home which some people need.

This is some good general information and a good start. Include some of the supporting statistics (the more specific you can be, the more persuasive your argument) and don't forget to include the author and name of your source.
DeleteWhat are GMO’s (genetically modified organisms)?
ReplyDeleteGMO’s are genetically modified organism: an organism or micro organism whose genetic material has been altered by means of genetic engineering.
Are there any long term effects on the human body?
1990 is the year GM became very popular, to this day people are eating these foods without any apparent health effects.
How are gmo’s created?
GMO’s are often combined by DNA from plants and animals to form new products in the barn and growing field.
What is really organic?
Most foods have gmo’s like soy corn and canola oil.
• Nearly 45% of the corn and 85% of soybeans grown in the United States are transgenic, according to the USDA/ERS.

Whats are the long term effect of GMO'S
ReplyDelete1. Accordint to the global reseaech I've learnrd that One of the great mysteries surrounding the spread of GMO plants around the world since the first commercial crops were released in the early 1990’s in the USA.
2.It is impossible to independently verify that GMO crops such as Monsanto Roundup Ready Soybeans or MON8110 GMO maize perform as the company claims, or that, as the company also claims, that they have no harmful side effects because the GMO companies forbid such tests!
3.The scientists rightly argue to EPA that food safety and environment protection “depend on making plant products available to regular scientific scrutiny.” We should think twice before we eat that next box of American breakfast cereal if the corn used is GMO.

Hi Trina,
DeleteBe sure to include the citation information above. And you didn't say what was one of the great mysteries surrounding the spread of GMO plants around the world?
