Case Study 5

(c) under Creative Commons Attribtion/Share Alike by Mike Peel
Here's a link to the fifth case study.

Please read it carefully for class on Monday - we'll be doing several projects related to the case, and you won't be able to participate in class on Monday unless you've done the reading. If you can, print out a copy to refer to in class.

This case is slightly longer, and it's complex, so give yourself some time to complete the reading.

Argument Maps

We'll be using Cartargrapher, a web-based argument mapping program, to do your second major project. You'll need a google account to sign in; if you don't have a google account, scroll down for a video about how to get one.

Here's a link to the mapping program.

Watch the videos below for a short introduction about how to use the program. It's quite easy and straightforward. Let me know if you have questions as you're working on your maps.

Here are some samples to practice with. You'll have to first identify whether the paragraph contains an argument or not, then identify the structure of the argument and map it.

Homework for Wednesday 1/29: Day Planner

(c) randymcking under Creative Commons Attribution/Share Alike
Here are the links to your calendars for homework. There are two (a full day doesn't fit into one page on the kind of template that has enough room for our purposes).

Morning through early evening

Early evening through night

Google will tell you there's no preview available - that's fine. You want to download and print the calendars, anyway.

So, for next week, fill in the following on your day planner:

  • All of your classes
  • Your work schedule, if any
  • Other obligations - things you must do
  • 3 hours per class for homework, review, and other assignments, broken up into AT LEAST two segments

Welcome!

Welcome to Philosophy 130: Introduction to Critical Thinking! This is one of my favorite classes - I hope you'll all learn a lot, think hard, and have fun doing it. Philosophy makes your brain work hard, but it's great fun.

Here's a link to your syllabus and schedule for this semester. The college is making a big effort to save paper, so I'll only have a few copies of the syllabus for those who don't have access to a printer, or regular access to a computer. If you'd like a printed copy of the syllabus, please print one out and bring it to class.

This is the course blog - bookmark it so that you can find it easily later. We'll be using it a lot this semester.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you have trouble opening the linked syllabus.

I look forward to meeting you all on Monday!
