Think of an issue that effects you and your community. Talk about that issue below in the comments section.

Post your discussion NO LATER THAN Monday morning at 8 a.m.

By class on Tuesday, be sure you've read all of the posts. In class, we'll decide which issues to use as our topics for the long term projects.

To comment, click on the little "comments" link at the bottom of this post.

Be sure to include your first name and last initial, so I can give you credit for doing the assignment!

Don't forget, we meet in the LISC on Thursday.

  4. People in general and the media in particular are afraid to speak the hard truths about difficult social issues (e.g. problems inherent in Islam, complex issues surrounding same-sex marriage, the profound negative effects of marijuana, etc...); while these issues are deeply important to many people, the tyranny of being "Politically Correct" obstructs freedom of expression and commonly wears the mask of "sensitivity."

Conversely, those who ignore the oppression of being "Politically Correct" (e.g. political candidates, shock jock radio hosts, edgy bloggers, etc...) frequently make oversimplified arguments that do no honor to the issue at hand, their constituency, or those people who may be the subject of the discourse.

Does it serve the public to only discuss those topics that are considered "Politically Correct" in a manner that is similarly approved of? Should we instead seek to challenge status quo opinions with carefully thought out arguments that convey the truth of our internal perspectives, regardless of how controversial they may be?

  5. I think an important issue we should all discuss is the unhealthy environment we live in. for example pollution and how that affects us in many ways. But I am also talking about other aspects of our community which affect our health that people usually don't take into consideration like violence and crime, lack of compassion for one another, television, advertisement, poor diets, unhealthy eating habits and lack of knowing and caring about what's unhealthy for you because all of those things affect our health. All of those things also affect our mood and thoughts and that also affects our health.

  8. Police layoffs causing a rise in crime. Not such a bright idea, or is it. I will have to do research and look at both sides to come up with a conclusion. The negative impact of this decision is obvious but what is the positive impact, is it worth it?

  11. Since the ruling by the courts on Citizens United and Speechnow.org in 2010, corporations, unions and individuals have been able to make unlimited contributions to political action committees, better known as super pacs. Now a relatively small number of individuals can make sizable contributions to influence elections. How has the court rulings changed the political landscape?

    1. Jasmeet, we're looking for issues that we can use as a project for applying our critical thinking skills. Is there something effecting a community you feel you're a part of, that you could see being a project you could inquire into at length and develop an argument about? Hunger and poverty are certainly issues, but this is a bit too broad to serve as a project topic.

  17. I think we should address the issue of how we can fix the ncaa and how it is very corrupt. The reason why i chose this issue is because of first hand experience of college recruiting for sports. though it might not be ncaa it was still college basketball

  20. A very important issue that we can argue can be obesity. There are many contributing factors around our community affecting this issue, such as the easy access to fast food and the high amount of stress levels. It is important to raise awareness about this issue due to the simple fact that it is affecting people’s health. Children are diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure at a much younger age, and overweight citizens are also limiting their life expectancy.

  23. -Undocumented students who have graduated high school should be allowed to have all the financial support in college from the government as residents and citizens.

-Constant referral to Christianity should not be allowed in grade schools. Such stories as "Adam and Eve". It confuses and almost lures young children into a religion.

i had some internet problems so I couldn’t post it before, but I’ll post some of the ideas i have in mine. I think we are poisoning ourselves by eating so many chemicals in our food. Many corporations’ makes their product with chemicals that harm our body, and the problem is that we don't even know what we are eating.
