Forum: Background Assumptions and Bias

Think about your sub-topic for your term paper. Then spend AT LEAST 10 full minutes brainstorming about what background assumptions, knowledge, principles, preferences, and ideas might influence the way you perceive arguments about your sub-topic.

Post your answers in comments. Don't forget to include an explanation of your sub-topic.

My main project topic was to decide if globalization is creating a positive or negative impact on U.S. citizens from an economic point of view. My sub-topic was to research about globalizations impact on the standard of living. Before researching about the topic, I had knew very little about globalization. However, some of the assumptions that I had made about the sub-topic is that it is creating a positive impact on standard of living, partially because I knew more about its' positive side. For an example, trade contributes to a major part of globalizations impact. Being a consumer of products myself, I notice that a great amount of clothes or accessories that I own are imported from foreign countries, therefore I made the assumption that globalization increases product selection. But, of course I had to do research in order to confirm it.

  2. The main question for our group project was should children have rights to bodily integrity against their parents, in regards to medical treatment? My sub question is children’s rights, what are children rights and do children have rights. When I first started this project I assumed that children had no rights over their parents. Only if I child is emancipated then the child could have rights over parents. I believed this because especially a child is not the one paying for the medical expenses and parents more often than not do what is best for their children. However, as the child ages they should be able to have a little more control over which medical treatments they would consent to.

  3. Topic: Should families on government assistance be subjected to mandatory drug testing

My sub-topic is the economic effects of drug-testing welfare recipients. I feel that my ideas has always lean towards supporting government assistance recipients from the start of this project. This is because I was raise in a low income family and I know how it feels to experience financial difficulties. I understand how hard it is for a family to survive and without such funds, these families will undergo more obsticles which will set them back far enough that it will be very diffecult for them to get back and reach certain goals in their life. I strongly believe that due to certian circumdtances sometimes people need a helping hand.

As with my group member above, my main group question asks if children have a right to bodily integrity against their parents. My sub-topic is looking at the rights that parents have. When I first looked at this question I didn't really put much thought into it. I assumed that parents have rights over their children because it's the repertoire of being a parent. It has been engrained in me to believe that parents make the calls in any and every aspect of their child and/or children's lives. In being a parent it is a given right to be the legal guardian over their offspring, that's just common knowledge. Coming into this topic, I was entering in the view that parental rights were a given. It's just something that is a part of how the world is. However, in gathering research my views and knowledge on the topic have expanded tremendously. I am learning that parents do have rights, but there is a flexible line that can be worked around when children reach a certain age. I think that when it comes to decision making in a family setting, in regards to medical treatment, parents have a greater say, but children of a certain age should be able to contribute to the decision as well.

  5. Our group's main topic question was, do child have rights to bodily integrity against their parents. My sub-topic question was what constitutues a child's best interest? At first I agreed that regarding the main topic question, children should have rights to bodily integrity; for example, sexual abuse from parents or relatives also the thought that a person's body belongs to that person. My sub-topic question got me to think in terms of betterment of the person. Does a child have the understanding to know what's best for him/her. this lead me to question the age identification in which a child is cognitive enough to make or have that understanding. This thinking delved or broadened into, whether or not the child is cognitive, what or who determines this definition of "child's best interest". Research showed that children under a certain age are very suspectible to peer pressure or easily pursuaded by many factors. This begged the question of who or what defines this criteria of best interest. This paper and the course of research and discovery has really let me to think critically and analytically about defining specific terms in argument stances.

  6. My Group Project like my two group members above was if children have the rights' to bodily integrity against their parents. My sub-topic was what rights' do children have and to what extent do they have certain rights' against their parents and at what age are those rights become more lenient or better words at what age can they be consider reasonable adults, or they are competent enough to comprehend the consequences of their actions. I have come to the conclusion that when they reach 12 and upward their brain starts to develop skills to make hypothesis, solve complex problems and separate imaginary from reality. From these studies haven been proven I have concluded that at age 15 these skills are at a now reasonably advanced stage to where they can now take part in making the decisions in their life, but it is the adults job to guide the child so that they are raised to be seen under the law as a upstanding citizen. Therefore, they do have the rights to some privacy, as well as liberal rights' as stated by the 14th amendment.

My group question is: What are the best approaches to reducing child abuse?

My sub question is: What are the conditions that put people at risk for child abuse? / How to draw the line between cultural practices and child abuse.

When I first started doing the research, all I found were parent factors, family factors such as parents being depressed and families being in poverty and substance abuse such as alcohol and drugs. I couldn't get much research so I dug deeper and thought I'd look into cultural differences. Such as how can we draw the line between cultural practice and child abuse, but still respect the culture? It's a tough one, but if social workers gained knowledge in different cultures, they'd be able to draw the line between the two.

  9. My subtopic: What are the conditions that put people at risk for child abuse?

Some background assumptions that came up before I started my research were questions such as "What is considered child abuse?" or "Who needs to be aware of this issue and how can this issue be addressed?"

After looking through my research, it was difficult to establish some sort of way to address the problems to the people who need to be aware of the issue because there were numerous and differential factors that cause abuse. Within each factor are several other points that are causes that lead to neglect. Even more so, several differences among cultures with differential definitions about abuse make it difficult find common ground. However, through this discovery,it may possibly be easier to further establish a solution to the issue in the long run.

My group topic is to prove if globalization creates a positive or negative effect on the U.S. My sub-topic is to research about globalizations impact on the U.S culture.
At first, my assumption about globalization is globalization has a positive effect on global economy including the U.S. What affects my assumption about that is the fact that I am an international student who comes from a third world country,Viet Nam. I had heard about "brain drain" and its effects on the U.S and my country when more and more highly skilled workers have tried to get a chance to go to the U.S. They are able to learn new knowledges and technology to convey them to the workers in their home country that contributes to the development of their country economy. Beside, their contribution to the host country also should be considerable because of the prosperity they have made there too. Since globalization develops and Viet Nam have participated in international organizations like WTO,they open their markets and foreign trade improves, the effect of globalization on my country seems to be considerably beneficial. Nowadays, there are a lots of foreign companies penetrating into VietNam creating a lot of good opportunities for the workers to work and to get training abroad. That were all the reasons that leads me to pick the topic and that also influences my thinking more about positive side on my research process.

  12. The groups main topic is "What are the best approaches to reducing rates fo child abuse."

Sub topic: Will participation in parenting classes help reduce rates of child abuse? If so in what way(s)? If not, why?

I am to find the "resources" that will lead to the parents in being successful in completing the parenting class and if the parent does not succeed in the class, what is hinderance of them completing the class.

One example of parents successfully completing the parenting class would be successfully completing rehabilitation if the parents were drug abusers. The first goal would be to rehabilitate the parents from their drug addiction. After successfully completing their rehabilitation the parents would also attend family counseling sessions. During the family counseling sessions the parents would be required to attend parenting classes as well. Parenting classes would be an extension of therapy used during the family counseling. In such a duo setting the parents would be more prone to complete each session as it is taken.

If the parents does not successfully complete the rehabilitation phase of the session then the parents will more than likely not complete the parenting classes.

  13. My group topic is to prove if globalization creates a positive or negative effect on the U.S. My sub-topic is to research about the alternatives of globalization. My presumptions are although Globalization helps to contribute the world economy, it is such an vast concept that the aftermaths of globalization seems to be in chaos. Furthermore, there is imbalance of power and income distribution and worker's rights are suppressed as global corporates try to reduce wage and other facilities to increase their output. Likewise, mass production has led to compromise on the quality of goods and environmental issues are overlooked. Hence, we need to revise the transnational rules regarding the inevitable Globalization. Decentralizing powers to the grass root level institutions is one of the key. The policies should be more world oriented and flexible for the newly participating countries. We should also consider not to create any domestic disadvantages for the domestic companies.

  14. Sub- Topic: What resources are available to use in a public policy?

While looking for information about how to prevent child abuse I found plenty of information. Many programs aim to help parents avoid maltreatment among their children, but hardly are mandatory. Theories that I ran across of possible approaches to prevent child maltreatment were understandable. Parents should better understand how to care for their children, they will be less abusive. This concept helps parents better themselves to be positive role models. Another huge influence on child maltreatment is parents not having enough proper resources to support their child. This means not being able to provide necessities for the child when its needed.
While finding information I also found out that many individuals who are getting ready to become parents aren't really interested in child services. This isn't acting responsibly and should be mandatory for first time parents. All individuals who plans to become parents need to participate in some type of program that helps prepare them for their child and their upcoming experiences.

  15. My topic is how economic globalization effects america. My sub topic is about economic globalization and the american culture. When we first started this I was the one who came up with this topic because it interests and is modern day growing phenomenon. I wanted my sub topic because american culture is everywhere and is all around the world. I think that it is interesting that things like holidays that were once religous celebrations are now major economic events. I have also been learning about the interconnection of all the nation's economic systems; if a major one suffers an economic surge or recession (like the one we are in now) then all those small nations that do business with us feel that ripple effect. When it comes to culture and economic globalization, I dont see a seperation in the future. Other nations become so taken and interested that it catches like a wild fire. There is no way that India's Bollywood will be disappearing. Or Japan's Harajuku style. I think all we can do is be aware of how our cultures blur and recognize that some native occurances need to be preserved for the sake of national identity
